Step 1
It is useful to have the image you require as your avatar either on Photobucket or on your computer, so it is ready to use.

Click on "Settings" at top right of screen.
Select "Edit Avatar" in left hand column of "My Settings" box

How to Upload a GEDCOM to FTF
Step one
- Firstly you will need to create a GEDCOM file. If you are unsure how to do this, please see the How to create a GEDCOM article.
- Once you have the GEDCOM, you will need to import it into the 'Family Tree Forum' database.
Step two
- Click on the 'GEDCOM' tab (on the navigation bar that runs across your screen underneath the Family Tree Forum logo), then select Search our Names Database.

How to Crop a Scanned Image
Using the basic Paint program within Windows, this visual will show you how to "crop" such items as BMD certificates which have already been scanned and are stored within your computer.
Step One
Go to Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Paint

General scanning tips:- Check photos for dirt or smudges.
- Check scanner glass for dust, fingerprints or smudges - using a lint free cloth to clean the glass.
- Specify the type of scan - when scanning photos you have a basic choice of colour or black and white. Usually best to scan in colour even if source photo is black and white.
- Select best scan resolution. To ensure reasonable quality for enhancement or restoration scan at a minimum of 300dpi (dots per inch).

SNIPPING TOOL is a useful program which is part of the Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 standard installation.

The Reference Library is stored in two locations. The main section is stored on the forum and accessed via the listing on the Home page. A smaller section is housed in the wiki section of the site which can be accessed via the Site Projects link on the navigation bar.
Navigation via the Home page:
- Clicking on the Reference Library tab on the navigation bar will take you to the Home page.
- The Reference Library can be accessed by selecting the appropriate heading

Select the files from your computer that you wish to upload. Holding down the Ctrl key whilst selecting files means you can select a number at a time.

Open the Family View page, click on FILE / EXPORT FILE / ENTIRE FILE
Once you have done this, you will need to specify a destination folder for the file to be exported to, for example My Documents or Desktop. You should also name the GEDCOM at this point, using a filename that you can easily recognise.
