There are a number of births on Lancsbmd which would fit the Thornton children - unfortunately it seems to be a very common name in the area.
However, the Lancashire Register Offices are usually quite helpful, so if you order from them and specify mother's maiden name, they won't charge you for a wrong cert.

Hmmmm......In 1871 there's a Charlotte Stanford aged 16, father William, living in Hulme (17 Lloyd St), but William is a factory labourer (born at sea :( )

The same family in 1861...Charlotte is listed as aged 5. William is a market porter and this time he says he was born in Manchester!

Lindy, do you have access to Ancestry to see these census pages?
I can't see a birth registration for Charlotte, but possibly she wasn't registered as it wasn't compulsory then.
In 1861 there is a "step-son" to the head of house, listed as Samuel Stamford aged 29. Presumably he took his step-father's name.
I found this marriage which may be for William and Sarah:
Marriages Sep 1855
Haywood Sarah Manchester 8d 294 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Shore Martha Manchester 8d 294
Stanford William Manchester 8d 294 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Wheeler William Manchester 8d 294
If I could find Sarah in 1851 it would be helpful if she had a son names Samuel, aged 19!
Well I couldn't find Samuel and mum Sarah in 1851, but did find a match in 1841:
Newbury St, Deansgate Manchester
William Haywood 30 cotton spinner
Sarah 30
Samuel 9
Sarah 4m
I will now try harder to find Sarah in 1851, knowing she should probably be married ir widowed rather than single...........
James Warren head m 45 French Polisher b Ireland
Ann wife m 42 b Ireland
Francis M son 15 french polisher b Liverpool
James son 6 b St Helens
Mary T dau 3 b Manchester
A lot of the 1851 Manchester census is wet and not on Ancestry!

Tere are these entries on Family History Online, but I no longer have any credit on the site to see if any of these people are in the same household:
Sarah HAYWOOD found in Unfilmed 1851 Census 2 entries in Lancashire during 1851 details £0.20
William HAYWOOD found in Unfilmed 1851 Census 3 entries in Lancashire during 1851 details £0.30
There's a Samuel Haywood working as a servant ages 19 on the non wet part (born Layland Lancs....I don't know where that is!)! He might be the son of Sarah. There are no Samuel's on the wet bit, but I've only looked at the most basic of mistranscriptions. Also William Haywood might have died by 1851.
Not sure if this is going to help much at this stage, but the William Stanford marriage to Sarah is on Lancashire BMD, which says it was at Manchester Cathedral and gives an alternative surname of Burrows for Sarah - that will be her maiden name before she married William Haywood.
