If my research is correct, John Butcher is my paternal grandmother's maternal gt. grandfather. My grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Hickman - see separate blog page.

Also see separate blog page for the widow of John's son, John (Jane Catherine Butcher, nee Woods).

FTF members have helped me research this family and this is as far as we have got with this line:

John Butcher Birth: c 1786 Buckingham, Bucks (1851 census).
FTF member could not find him in Buckingham parish records.
IGI - nil. It is a common name so difficult to get further back than this.

Marriage ? Family Search IGI/Ancestry.co.uk: 30/4/1804 St Andrew By The Wardrobe, London. John Butcher & Elizabeth Jones.
Does not give occupation or any other details so no proof this is correct one.

Death: Likely to be correct as neither he or his wife appear in the 1861 census:

BMD: 1851 Oct q Islington, Gtr London, Middx Vol 3 p223.

His wife: ? Elizabeth Butcher 1857 Oct q Islington.

John and Elizabeth’s children:

Census

1841 See blog page on Jane Catherine Butcher (nee Woods). John was living with his family and married son, John.

The link from Elizabeth Jane Hickman, my grandmother, back to John Butcher b1786 partly rests on John Butcher born c 1816 being his son.
The 1851 census below, where Eleanor Butcher is staying with her grandparents, firms up the link.

There are also further confirmations when Lucretia, daughter of son John, stayed with his sister in subsequent census records.

1851 Head (lodger): John Butcher b1786 Buckingham, Bucks.
Stone Mason.
Spouse: Elizabeth b1788 Southgate, Middx
Daughter: *Elizabeth b1833 St Pancras. Single. Milliner.
Daughter: **Eleanor b1838 St Pancras. Single. Milliner.

Lodgers: Charles Adams 70, potter, and wife, Ann 63

They were all lodgers of: Henry Bren b1808 Steel and copper plate printer and his family.

28 Albion St, Islington, Middx. Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints.
Sub-reg district: Islington W.

*John’s occupation was a mason on her parish marriage record 1857.

**This is his grand-daughter not daughter. She does not appear with her widowed mother in 1851 census. John & Elizabeth did not have a daughter called Eleanor.

Incorrect relationship stated on census - unless they adopted her. The census form was probably filled in by the head of the house, Henry Bren, and that could explain the error. As Eleanor and Elizabeth were fairly close in ages, they probably appeared more like sisters than aunt and neice.
