    Fibre Broadband too fast

    Might help others

I have been having a lot of disconnection problems with my internet.
Had various Engineers out ,all said fault was somewhere outside, finally got a Man who knew what he was doing, he asked if I had upgraded recently, I had gone to superfast Fibre a few months ago, which tallied with the drop offs.
Turns out my line is too far from the box to have Superfast , so he capped it for me at the top speed I can cope with.
I will be asking for a credit for all the extra money I have been paying.
What is annoying is, when I go to the box to check whether I can have it here, it says yes??

What did they say you were going to get?

Grim he wrote down what he found for me ,so when I ring tomorrow I can tell them, although he has written a report too.
Not sure what speed thought he said no more than 14, I am ringing them tomorrow, I'll find out then

what a palaver they are still trying to sort the line, finally got a credit.
Does anyone understand the wiring system for the broadband? as first they say they will just cap it, now they are saying it might not be able to help ,and then I'd need a new cable, have had 6 different Engineers here so far, and another coming Monday.
No point changing providers while I have this problem.

Have never heard of this before Val. I would have assumed, as you did, that if they tell you what speed your line can take then that is what you should get (or below it within a certain tolerance) unless you opt for a lower speed package should you not need the fastest (most expensive) one.
Thank goodness my change of provider and speed upgrade went very smoothly. Couldn't have coped with what you are going through. Hope it sorts itself out at next visit.

Wiring for FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) uses the exact same cables into your property as ADSL ('ordinary' broadband) would have done.

The only difference is how it gets from the exchange to your local street cabinet, with FTTC being over fibre and ADSL being over metal, usually copper but in some cases aluminium or a combination of the two.

Due to how the technologies work, it is also possible for a non fibre connection to be faster than a FTTC one dependant on how far you are from the street cabinet.

Whilst you are having the problem dealt with, it is unlikely you would be able to change providers without having another line installed as the open order on your line for the repair would prevent the line transfer to another provider.

Your 'fibre' connection will have a "Downstream Handback Threshold", and unless your speed drops below that, your connection will be deemed to be ok

Thanks Galloway, its getting beyond a joke now, the specialist Engineer they sent last week, said I would need a new Copper Cable, the next one said no I dont, it just goes on and on, they have already credited me with £85.
Thanks Grim I sort of understand that, I dont see how them slowing it down on the line I have ,will be any good.

If the line is unstable/noisy they will limit or cap the speed at a point where the line remains stable.

Thanks again Grim, they told me it was capped last week , and as I am still getting disconnected they have to see why ?
Wish I'd stayed with the ordinary Broadband.

The Engineer that came today finally found the fault on the line, took him from 3.30pm till 7.40pm today, and it was not where the other 8 had said, it was the other direction.

Thanks its only taken them 4 months to find it , they did cap the speed, as the line was so bad, and so far from the Junction, so whether or not it can be reinstated, shall know today.

Two problems, one was water getting in a box just outside the front Garden, was covered in moss ,which they fixed but the problem still appeared, so back they came another 3 times, until one who checked everything, found a join.
He noticed one end was grey the other brown, thought it odd so gave it a good checking over, it was that plus it was much too near the surface, so they stripped it out and replaced ,and made sure its not so near the surface this time, as they think the Farmer may have driven over it in his Tractor and squashed it.
I am just waiting now for another credit, its mounting up.
