Just one thought - are you sure that the marriage certificates you have for Benjamin Moffat are for the same person as there appear to be two people with the same/similar name born around the same time!

1881 shows:
Benjamin Moffatt (married to Ann) born 1856 Manchester
and
Benjamin Moffett (boarder) born 1859 Manchester.
