It's a shame but just goes to show how easy it would have been to have accepted that birth. It's disappointing but that is why we always stress the importance of buying the certificates; it's so easy to get carried away thinking you are on the right track. Many don't buy as we well know and their trees aren't worth a fig.

The drawing board is Nellie Edith Stevens with father Alfred Stevens a carpenter - that's the information she gave at her marriage. We also have her date of birth as 31 Dec 1893 from the 1939 Register.

So we need to search again for these details and see if we can find a better match!

Now that it has been accepted that I should ‘go back to the drawing board’, I’ve devised a plan. What do the forum members think of it please?

I try to find Alfred Stevens, the carpenter named as Nellie’s father on her marriage certificate.

I have found 4 maybe 5 Alfred Stevens who might just fit the requirements.

If I create a tree for each of them on Ancestry I could then see what ‘hints’ appear.

Might that plan yield fruit?

1911 lived 57 Halkin St, Belgrade - Ironer in shoe factory
If she was a friend of Nellie perhaps they met in Belgrade or at work
Gipsy Lane is only a short walk from all these addresses.

I think he then remarries to Lydia Grace Reeves Reg Dec 1895 Thanet.

In 1911 they are in Bishopbourne Canterbury.

Of course it could be, everything fits: the name, except for the missing 'Edith' the DOB and the father's name, but Canterbury, Kent??

Nellie Edith Stevens was married in Leicester and lived in Leicester (1939 register).

My family never in my experience or in any talk mentioned any where other than Leicester. In my time if they went as far as Loughborough, 12 miles away, it was a major event.

Saying that I was born in Blackpool, probably due to evacuations during WW2.
