There is also an Isabella Sillitoe as a witness, on a marr cert for one Mary's children. Could Mary be with her on the 71/81 census? It seems that Mary is with her family on 61 only. Margaret is indeed, I think, another child as there are bapts on IGI.

Do you know who Isabella is?

      IGI has
      Isabella Shillito
Christening: 13 JUL 1856 St Peter'S, Liverpool, Lancashire
      Father: Henry Shillito
      Mother: Mary Elizabeth Shillito
      Batch: C044145

If this is the witness, she can't be Mary Agnes' sister, but she could be a cousin?

No, sorry she is just a witness that's all I know. I haven't been able to place her in the family yet. Yes it seems likely she is a cousin, so the plot thickens! So I presume that Henry could be William's brother!!

thanks very much for the bapt, great to have.

But of course we don't KNOW that these baptisms, which tie in with census familes Elaine found, are the right set of Sillitoes!

Mary Agnes, if her father was a labourer, would have been out to work at the age of about 13, so unlikely to be living at home in 1871, making it harder to find her. At least her surname isn't Smith!

No, but Sillitoe has been just as hard to find, with so many errors to consider. It would be great to find Mary, but I may never know. At least there is one census she is with her family, which I think is correct.

Going back to the beginning. Where does she say she was born in Cheshire?
Do you have a 1891 or 1901 census for her?

1901, transcribed wrong, Agnes Haighes! (She marr William Hayes, who was not there at the time, he was working in Barrow in Furness.)

                        Born Seacombe, Cheshire.

1891 RG12 piece 2896 f85 p13. I haven't the census just the transcribed page for William Hayes as Head, wife Agnes, so can't be sure what she put for birthplace, sorry.

                          1891 census ref is RG12; Piece: 2896; Folio 84; Page 13

                          - and we have Agnes born 1864 Birkenhead Cheshire.

Maybe a search for Agnes, rather than Mary, on previous census might turn up something.

Yes, that's what I found. So Mary/Agnes as she was calling herself . This is a far as I'ce got with her, she has been so difficult to trace. Haighes was so hard as you can imagine, to find.

No Agnes Sillitoe baptisms on IGI in either Lancs or Cheshire, or in birth index. I also tried lookng for Shil* without success.

I am now wondering if she was born with different surname and William Sillitoe was her stepfather.

Seacombe, which is where she says she was born in 1901, is just north of Birkenhead, where she says she was born in the 1891 census. Both are of course just across the water from Liverpool, so perhaps the Liverpool Sillitoes do tie in somewhere.

Possibly? But there is a marriage for William Silitoe and an Ann Kelly 1853 St Nicholas Liverpool, which could be correct as son James bc 1855.

I haven't found a birth reg for MAry Agnes either????

And Mary was the second child seemingly.
