thanks for the links ... I looked at them before posting. I also found the leics.gov one but was unable to open it at the time, however able to after STG posted it (don't know what the problem was!).
Anyway, it seems registers for quite a few of the Leicester city churches, at least the ones I was interested in looking at, aren't available pre-1880. Is that because they weren't built until after the influx of people into the city from the county?Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today ~ follow your dream!

That's usually the explanation of churches with no earlier records specially in cities. The Victorians were great church builders (many of which are now becoming redundant again as populations change) You could email the Archives and ask about the ones you are interested in, they would able to tell you which church would have been used before the new ones were built.
