    By the way, I had a quick look at the European patent office site in case there was a patent in his name; I didn't find anything, but it would probably have expired by now anyway.

      Thanks Mary. I think I had checked some patent offices a few years back (re: the typewriter story mentioned above) but nothing showed up for his name. Even though something expires, would there not be a record kept of it e.g. file of expired patents?

              Scotts instruments.

              Captain Oates who accompanied Scott has a family museum and exhibition in Selborne, Hampshire.. Selborne Parish Council it's an interesting visit (above Gilbert White's house) his family all being explorers in Africa etc, I would think the instruments were fairly common and could give you a start to those popular at the time. Good luck.

                      I went to Gilbert White & Titus Oates museums ages ago, before I got interested in Scott and Shakleton. Wish I'd paid more attention now. All I can really remember is the zigzag path!
