This gentleman is my father in laws grandfather and there is very little known about him. He was born in about 1876 in what is now Lithuania, fled there for a new life in South Africa. He must have married, as he had at least three children. He died in 1936 of breast cancer in South Africa but we do know he fought in the Boer war. Where do I start looking for more information about him - I have a worldwide membership of ancestry but don't know where to look. MTIA

if it is useful, you could go to kew and get his records. i found similar for my ancestor on fmp, and hired a military researcher called kevin asplin, he got the records from kew for me. didn't cost much, and he was brilliant.

According to the Outbound Passenger lists (on FMP & Ancestry) he sailed from London to Capetown on the Karamea on the 6th June 1900 - he is listed as aged 24, foreign, and a cabinet maker.
Agree with the comment above - accessing the documents at Kew should be straightforward - (assuming it is the correct man,).
Did he come back to the UK as far as you know ? - there is an interesting entry in the TNA catalogue, dated 1905 which reads:
"Photograph of Jacob Wolffe standing in swimming costume, wearing medals, showing left arm, standing."

There's also a specialist LitvakSIG maling list, accessible via JewishGen, which could have useful suggestions for you.

My father in law doesn't think this could be him because he tells me one of his aunts was born in 1899 (unless she was born elsewhere) and his Mum in 1903 and his wife would have been on the passenger list too. He now doesn't think he was a soldier either, (having lead me to believe he was) but is happy for me to dig around to my hearts content. Further the last bit of research his comment was, the family have never lived in Maida Vale so it can't be him.
Thank you all very much for trying to help me, now I think I need to look at the passenger lists and look to see if the wife and FiL's aunt are also listed. Also, apparently he had problems getting out of SA as it was full of soldiers.

If the outgoing entry (in 1900) is correct, he appears to have returned via Southampton on 27th Feb 1906 on the ship Gascon, described as a carpenter.Last edited by AntonyM; 09-04-13, 10:54.Retired professional researcher, and ex- deputy registrar, now based in Worcestershire.
