    Valerie, this is interesting:

It would be a good idea to contact them:

Apparently there are lots of wills available. How exciting!

There is also an Edward Coulson who appears on the censuses who was born c. 1826 at High Cross:

      1851 Census
      COULSON, Edward
      LAMBETH, Surrey
      HO107 piece 1570 folio 265 page 4

In 1861 it has been given as High Cross, Hants, but I expect that was the enumerator's error.

In 1871 he says he was born at Ware:

      1871 Census
      COULSON, Edward
      BETHNAL GREEN, London, Middlesex
      RG10 piece 492 folio 4 page 1

The 1881 census page is damaged:
      1881 Census
      COLSON, Edward
      BETHNAL GREEN, London, Middlesex
      RG11 piece 424 folio 108 page 62

        Look at this, Valerie:

        1841 Census
        COULSON, Edward
        WARE, Hertfordshire
        HO107 piece 434 folio 10/35 page 12
        Address: High Cross, Standon
        John Coulson 65 Painter Hertfordshire
        Eliza Coulson 20 Hertfordshire
        Edward Coulson 15 Hertfordshire

I wonder if Edward and Ralph were brothers, and John their father? It's not a certainty, but a possibility.

Hi Valerie, I have just got back from the RO at Hertford and I think I have good news for you!

I asked a member of staff which parish to look at if someone was born in High Cross. Her booklet said Braughing, but we were both surprised at that. She asked the person's name and looked behind her desk at something which I couldn't see and told me a Ralph Coulson was born c. 1812 in Thundridge. So I got out the microfilm and had a look.

              Here is what I found:

1812 28 June Ralph son of John and Mary Coulson St 1 month (we think the St means they lived in Standon - High Cross is always mentioned as High Cross, Standon)

So then I looked on and I found these:

1804 Oct 16 Mary Ann Coulson d of John and Mary
1805 Nov 24 Lucy Coulson d of John and Mary
1807 May 17 John Coulson S of John and Mary
1809 Nov 20 Mary Coulson d of John and Mary
1812 18 Jun Ralph, s. of John and Mary Coulson St 1 m

Then the new registers were introduced:

22 Dec 1816 Eliza John and Mary Coulson High Cross Glazier
13 Jul 1817 John John and Mary Coulson High Cross Glazier
7 Nov 1819 Harriet John and Mary Coulson High Cross Plumber
2 Mar 1823 Edward John and Mary Coulson High Cross Glazier

I then looked at the Hertfordshire Marriage Index and found this marriage:

              John Coulson married Mary Skinner
              at Standon 14 July 1804

so I looked at the parish register:

              John Coulson & Mary Skinner
both of this Parish were married in this CHurch
by banns this 14th day of July 1804
by me C. Roberts Curate of Meeston

This marriage was solemnized The Mark of John Coulson x
betwen us The Mark of Mary Skinner x

In the presence of Sarah Green
              Joseph Skinner
              Samuel Pickel

              I hope this help you.
On the 1841 censuS Ralph gives his age as 29.
I would think this is your family.

So if you look back to my post # 23 we have this:

                1841 Census
                Address: High Cross, Standon
                COULSON, John M 65 1776 Hertfordshire
                COULSON, Eliza F 20 1821 Hertfordshire
                COULSON, Edward M 15 1826 Hertfordshire

so John is Ralph's father and Eliza and Edward his siblings.

I was pleased to be able to help, Valerie.
Your researching skills will improve with time - we were all inexperienced once. You will pick up hints from other people. Just look at the websites and databases other people use.

Remember we found Ralph's brother, Edward, above.
