I'm looking at a marriage around 1800 in Leicestershire on Ancestry. There's a note at the side which says HC & the entry talks about the marriage of John Hudson of H & Ann Oase of C. Does anyone know what H&C refer to please ?

Just checked the marriages on Ancestry, and the marriage between John Hudson and Ann Hoase was in 1789.
Found it on the Phillimore's marriage disc: the marriage took place on 7th June 1789, and it's listed under "Marriages at Prestwold, including Burton-on-the-Wolds, and Cotes". John was from Hoton and Ann from Cotes.
According to Genuki, Cotes was in Prestwold parish:

Thanks very much again.
This is connected with this, ......could someone double check for me, please ? There's a Mary Hudson, born 1776. She's on the 1841 census in Shepshed, Leics, but she isn't there on the 1851 census. I can't find a death for her between those dates in Shepshed. Could someone check to see if I've missed it, please ? (I think she may be the Ann Hudson who died there in 1843)
Thank you

The only adult Mary Hudson I can find among the Shepshed burials was buried there in 1856, aged 87.
However, there is an Ann Hudson buried in Shepshed on 23/5/1843, aged 67. This might be her death (Loughborough RD includes Shepshed):
Deaths Sep 1843
HUDSON Ann Loughbro' 15 88
The registration would be a bit late, but I think you were allowed 6 weeks to register a death.Last edited by Mary from Italy; 29-06-11, 11:47.

Yes, that's right, Mary.....looks like we've found Mary & Ann....but only one John between them ! Just to complicate matters, there's another William baptised in Shepshed in 1813. Someone has had a look at the registers for me & says it's definitely John not William. (& not John William)....but he calls himself William on the 1881 census ! Then there's another William Hudson baptised the same year (1813) parents John & Ann (the same names as my William's parents) in Kegworth. I've mailed one of his descendants & they've decided to adopt a John & Ann Hudson living in Kingston on Soar as his parents as they couldn't find any other candidates.
There are quite a few "family notices" in the Leicester Mercury from the time, so I think all I can do is to try & plot them.
Please send a rescue party if you don't hear from me by 2015Last edited by greyingrey; 30-06-11, 09:40.
