This site seams to confirm that Gladys L Smith's AKA Mary Pickford grandfather on her dads side was at least called Joseph Smith

After finding the family in the 1881 stating all chidren born in Ontario I did then find them in the 1871 census in St Johns Ward Toronto with an additional child Elizabeth age 16 also born Ontario.
