Your Averill/Haverill tale reminds me of a friend of my mother's, who lived in the same place as you and was known to the world as Hilda. She claimed that when the vicar said "name this child", the parents responded "we'll 'ave 'er 'Ilda" so she was baptised Averilda. It may well be apocryphal - I don't know her maiden surname and my mother died many years ago.
