    Elizabeth Jane Cousins pre marriage

    Some census/birth help please.

    Elizabeth Jane cousins married George Slade on 25th Dec 1866 in Melplash Dorset. Her father is given as William Cousins, and Georges father is also given as William!

    This is the earliest record I have for both of them. In future census Elizabeth has a birth year of 1844/45.

    George died in 1870 so I don't actually have him on a census at all.

    Elizabeth is a bit of a conundrum. I cant find her birth (or a likely Dorset one) on GRO. In photos and conversations with older relatives she was referred to as Grandma Dunn. Is there just a generation slip and her mother was actually Dunn. Or did she marry for a 3rd time (married Mr Russell after George's young death) to a Mr Dunn and that's where it comes from.

    I was wondering if you lovely lot could take a look and see what options you could dig up.

    Have you considered that she may not have been born in Dorset?

        Sylvia C yes I had seen those entries in GRO and wondered. Thanks for eliminating the Swan option.

        Ancestry suggested a Jane Cousins entry in 1844 for Dorset so i bought the cert (being £2.50 for a digital makes it so much more affordable!!!) But not William as a father.

          Sylvia C yes got George's death in 1870. Such a shame, he was so young. And left behind a 2yr old son Benjamin. Amazingly we have a picture of George holding Benjamin who looks to be about 1yr old.

            In the 1871 Census, after George had died, Elizabeth is shown with Benjamin and another baby ....

                    Note that she was apparently baptised Georgiana


                    Would it be a stretch of imagination to say that their next child would be given "Georgina" or "Georgiana" as a second name in memory of this loss,.

                    That she might then be called Georgina as a child (see the 1851 Census), and that Elizabeth might, just possibly, change it to Jane later???????

                    A little revolt against her parents?????

                      Georgiana is pronounced Joor-jane-a. So not to much of a stretch. Especially if you have other info supporting this baptism.

                        Oooo this is interesting. I've got the 1881 census but didn't go over the page to see her brother and the lodgers. Rookie error!

                          Going back to her marriage certificate to George (which is the 1st use I gave of middle name Jane) - Benjamin Cousins is a witness so seems that her and her brother were quite close.

                          on all the census I have for her (1871 onwards) the most she gives is an initial J but not a full middle name.

                          And if her mother was Jane it wouldn't be a massive leap to see where this middle name came from
