I hope someone is able to see what I can’t.
I have Charles Taylor, born 1820 in Dorking, Surrey.
In 1840, he marries Mary Nye in Holmwood, Surrey.
Mary died in premature childbirth in 1844, in Dorking, Surrey.
I haven’t found any children born to them prior to this date.
In 1861, Charles is marked as a widower, living with his three sons. Charles b Dorking 1853, John b Kingston 1857, George b Kingston 1859.
They are living at 7, Youngs Buildings, Kingston.
Also with them is Ann Sturt, age 29, a servant.
Thanks to the £2.50 downloads, I’ve now been able to discover that Ann Sturt is actually the mother of all three boys.
I haven’t found a marriage between them, although Ann calls herself Ann Taylor on the birth certificates. Charles senior died at the same address in 1867, age 46.
Annoyingly, there is an Ann Sturt marrying in Dorking in 1856, but there are two female names and only one male. So without buying the certificate it isn’t possible to know if Charles Taylor was the other male.
It would really help to find him in 1851. He was a carpenter and seems to have always lived around Dorking/Kingston. I can’t find Ann Sturt in 1851 either, so I don’t know if they were together.
A further puzzle is why she is named as servant in 1861, with her maiden name. Charles had been widowed since 1844, so he was free to marry her, and they had at least three children.
Apologies for the long post and TIA to anyone who can help.
