Merchant Navy WW1

My husband's grandad was a merchant seaman, certainly after WW1. We are certain he would have been involved in the war, given his birth year 1887.
His name is William Culley, born Millwall, South London.

We are unable to find any service record for him. Can anyone give us some pointers please?

ADDED: If his DoB was 21 Sep 1887 then FmP has records for him too, including one with a photograph. He was a ship's steward.
