  • Does anyone fancy seeing if they can find a birth for me please?

I've decided to see if I can break through one of my brick walls (no doubt more of which later), but can anyone help me find a baptism record for Charles Bessell?

His father was George Bessell (1797-1829 Shoreditch, London) and his mother was Martha nee Jacobs (1799-1849). He is first listed on Poor Law Removal and Settlement Papers (Ancestry) in 1829, where he is listed as "about 10 years old".

His siblings were all easy to trace (again Ancestry) and I am hoping that I am just not looking correctly.
Virginia Betsy baptised: 26 May 1822 St Luke Finsbury, Islington
Edwenia / Edwina Hance baptised: 22 June 1824 St Andrew, Holborn, City of London
William Henry baptised: 19 June 1825 St Andrew, Holborn, City of London
Edward John baptised: 30 December 1827 West Twyford, Ealing
Richard Salmon baptised: 17 April 1829 St Andrew, Holborn, City of London

On his marriage record, 1848, he calls himself "Charles Mowbray George Bessell".

There are a few trees on Ancestry for the family but I am finding anomalies in them, partly because a lot are just copies of each other, and want to start from scratch for my tree.

Any help anyone can offer is very gratefully received!

I guess the occupation means George worked in a cheese factory?

On the Old Occupations website a Cheese Factor is a Cheese Dealer/ Seller. Maybe George was finding all about local cheeses? Decided it was a good time to get his son baptised too.

Interesting that he was baptised a "Mowbray". It means his grandparents are who I think and some people have muddled a few different earlier Charles Bessell's (partly because one was a Captain and someone has posted a portrait of him and others have assumed that their Charles Bessell is that Charles Bessell). Might be asking lots more questions later!

I completely forgot that Martha (the mother) was born in Somerset. Sorry! But George becomes a school master and then a clerk.

Is it in our Big Book in the reference library?
