  • Computer virus. How did I get this?

Last evening I was using Google to search for names in OH's tree.I put his 3x great grandmother's name in and Google came up with its usual list of sites. The one at the top was clearly a pornographic one but underneath it said "This site may harm your computer" ( I don't have anything like McAfee Site Advisor by the way so I was a bit puzzled as to how it came to tell me that). Whilst I was taking that in, my anti-virus program popped up telling me that there was something nasty on my computer which it recommended I let it clean off. Since I hadn't clicked on any of the sites listed on Google including the one that said it might be harmful,I don't understand how it got on to my computer.I thought you had to actually visit an infected site to pick these things up. The nasty was something called VirTool:J5/Obfuscator which was apparently, a severe threat.

HOW on earth did I get this thing? Is it Google that is infected? I'm very wary of using Google or any search engine again if you can get stuff like this just by certain sites being thrown up from a search

The "This site may harm your computer" warning is a feature of google's safe search system. It's letting you know the destination of the link may be harmful. It's just doing it's job - nothing to worry about.

You won't get a virus from the google search results, so don't worry about that either.

Did you anti-virus program tell you the name of the file it was concerned about?

This was what my program told me it was called Dave

VirTool:J5/Obfuscator.M which was apparently, a severe threat. It was removed by my anti-virus.

I just googled that virus, just out of curiosity - a number of results came up, I clicked on the first and it was some awful site with a picture of a man dead after an accident. A forum withp eople exchanging photos like that!! Horrific, sick, what has the world come to.

But thing is, why did the typing in the virus name take it to that site? Im now running a full scan on my puter.

If you haven't already done so, I would dowload and run Malwarebytes - I got a virus a few months back, which although Norton recognised and apparently dealt with, Malwarebytes found it after the Norton scan and deleted it.

That sounds similar to what happened to me Heather....except that I only put OH's ancestor's name into Google and the first site listed was one that had her name on it together with a quite disgusting description of her....erm....charms. And this was only in the brief description Google give you of a site! Needless to say, I didn't click on it or anything else in the list - it didn't give me time - but I still aparently got the virus. Because this happened on Google I won't put the name of the virus in there to find out about it (and reading what has happened to you, I'm glad I didn't) but I did put it into Bing....which said it couldn't find any results. All very strange. I hope your computer is OK Heather.

            Dave, where are you?
