  • "on a list"

My gg-grandfather William Chamberlain died in 1857 in Lyndon, Rutland. The 1861 census shows his 3 sons at the family farm under the no-doubt-watchful eye of a temporary housekeeper. Their sister is at a school in Lincolnshire, but above John, the eldest brother's, name is written "mother on a list". Can anyone shed light on what list it might have been and where I could search for records? thanks in anticipation.

Welcome to FTF. I think you may find it says "Mother on a Visit"

I noticed on the 1871 census there was a young child in the house - well if you follow Ann to the ref of the 1861 above you'll see that there is a Sylvia Sidney in that househols - they could well be related.

Thanks WendyP, always good to get a fresh pair of eyes on something you've read a hundred times! I can do some more digging in Dalston.
