  • Documents Online - new records available

    I hadn't looked for a while (i.e. since August) and have just spotted a couple of new categories:

    Royal Hospital Chelsea
    (1260 items)
    You can search and download selected volumes of soldiers’ service records from the Royal Hospital Chelsea. This is the main series of service documents of soldiers (but not officers) who became either in- or out-pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The attestation and discharge documents within it constitute the most detailed record of a soldier’s service.
    You can search by:
    * First name
    * Last name
    * Service number
    * Place of birth
    The records usually give particulars of age, birthplace, service (including any decorations), physical description, previous occupation on enlistment and the reason for discharge to pension. Documents after 1883 usually contain fuller particulars, such as next of kin and details of marriage and children.
    Early Irish Maps from State Papers c1558 - c1610 (69 items)
    These maps are among the best known and most frequently consulted maps in The National Archives. You can search and download more than 60 different maps depicting plantations, fortifications and townships in Ireland during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. They are among the earliest cartographic representations of Ireland and include the famous map of Hibernia drawn by John Goghe in 1567 (catalogue reference MPF 1/68).

    These maps come from the ‘State Papers Ireland’, the main record of government business in the early modern period.
    ... and you can download these state papers free of charge using the links in the table. The table also shows the original references, and which map extract references the maps are now held under.
    There are a few ups/downs in the pre-existing categories - mostly in single figures of change - including an additional 1,144 records for Poor Law Union Correspondence up from 5022 to 6166 items.

          Someone has just mentioned that there's a new lot of records:
          RAF officers' service records 1918 - 1919: 101,612 of them.
          You can search and download the service records of officers who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. This collection comprises the records of over 99,000 individuals, which have been taken from the collection AIR 76.

          The RAF was the world's first independent military air arm and by the end of the First World War it had become the largest, with over 27,000 officers and 250,000 other ranks. By the end of 1919, 26,000 of the 27,000 officers had been discharged and it is largely their service details which are held in this series.

          The records were created from the inception of the RAF in April 1918, however they include retrospective details of earlier service in the Royal Flying Corps or Royal Naval Air Service, where appropriate.
          They also seem to have added 883 new records to Poor Law Union Correspondence

            !

            Christine, finally my grandfather's service records for WWI are on line! I noticed a few days ago but still haven't got around to downloading them. He was in the Royal Flying Corps.:smilee:

            (I was meant to be going to the National Arcives at Kew on Tuesday, but with the continued disruption on First Capital Connect I shan't be going unless things improve. I was meant to be meeting younger daughter's boyfriend there to help him with his research, so we shall have to reschedule. Fingers crossed for a resolution to the train problem, it's dreadful apparently.)

              I forgot to mention that my grandmother's service record is on there too - she joined the Women's Royal Flying Corps as soon as she was old enough. She lived in Glasgow. That is how my grandparents met.

                  This is interesting!

                  Elizabeth would you mind telling me if the documents are worth downloading in your opinion?

                  One of mine appears on there with 4 pages. Do these records not appear on Ancestry at all do you know?

                  Thanks

                    Joan, I don't think my grandfather's record is on Ancestry, although I believe my grandmother's is.

                    I had 7 pages for my grandfather. In some ways I was disappointed as I couldn't even see an enlistment date, but then it gave me other good information, such as the fact that his "Occupation in Civil Life" as a Mechanical Engineer at Belriot & Space? Aircraft Co. at Weybridge in Surrey from May 1915 until April 1916 (he was an aeronautical engineer all his life). I assume until he enlisted/was called up in 1916 (when they had a recruitment drive) he was exempt. I have photos of him in an album at Bleirot's, with the name clearly visible on a hangar, but I didn't know the exact date.

                    It also told me he was in hospital in 1917, but not what was wrong, but after that he was "Medically Unfit", but then later in April 1917 it says he was fit for "light duty".

                    It also tells me his qualifications and that he had qualified as "Associate of Manchester Technical College 8 years studen previsouly assiant to Cheif Druaghtsman on Gun * St? Engingeering works. It also tells of his spcialism in the F.FC and that he was working in the Aerial Gunnery Schools.

                    It also gives me my great-grandmother's address, so she had moved since the 1911 census.

                    I have also downloaded the records of two of his brothers, both the in RFC and one a night pilot.

                    My grandfather never seemed to have many health problems, but I believe he couldn't fly for some reason.

                            WW1 Merchant Seamen Medal Cards

                            Just spotted this new category:
                            You can search and download over 155,000 cards recording the award of campaign medals to merchant seamen in the First World War. These cards record the award of the British War Medal, Mercantile Marine Medal and Silver War Badge. The cards are from the catalogue references BT 351/1/1, BT 351/1/2 and MT 9/1404.
                            The records were used to record the issue of medals to individual seamen. All recipients of Mercantile Marine Medals were automatically entitled to the British War Medal and the index additionally records its issue.
                            The Mercantile Marine Medal was awarded to those who served at sea for no less than six months between 4 August 1914 and 11 November 1918, and who served at sea on at least one voyage through a danger zone. All recipients of the Mercantile Marine Medal were automatically entitled to the British War Medal.
                            The Silver War Badge was awarded to merchant seamen who were no longer fit for sea service as a result of sickness or wounds contracted or received during the war, either at home or overseas.
                            There have also been some additions to other categories.
