Once you have found the year (1996) change the date range to 01/01/1996 to 01/07/1996, then see if you still get a result. If not, switch to the other half of the year (01/07/1996 to 31/12/1996). Then halve that again and repeat (i.e. 01/07/1996 to 30/09/1996, etc). That way you can narrow down to the exact date - it's called a binary search and generally only takes a dozen or so tries until you get it! Obviously this only works if the actual date has been transcribed in the database, but in the case of the NZ records it has, even though the search results don't show it.

            Cheers,
            Richard

                Hi Sheila

A lot of NZ cemeteries have online records, links from here: Cemeteries and Cemetery Records : New Zealand : Family History : History : Internet Gateway - Reference - Christchurch City Libraries

However, I had a quick look and couldn't find Sidney. Therefore, you'd probably need to purchase the death cert if you want more info.

Hi Richard from the Tropical North of Queensland. As I said he is just a "twig" but I needed to get him finished. He is hard to pin down as he emigrated to Australia in 1947,I do not know where, he did not not like it here :o I've been told and went on to NZ

Did you know that his immigration to Australia is on the National Archives site? At least that confirms his date of birth:

BLOOD Sidney born 2 June 1920; departing UK under the Ex-servicemens Free Passage Scheme

RecordSearch - National Archives of Australia

If he was an ex-serviceman, he may be buried in a services cemetery. Could be worthwhile contacting the Veterans Affairs in NZ to see if they have record of him:

VANZ - Memorials and Cemeteries Overview

By the way, he was born in Salford (Lancs) not Sheffield:

                    Births Sep 1920
Blood Sidney Bottomley Salford 8d 108

                    Cheers,
                    Richard

Hello again Thanks for all that I knew his mothers maiden name was Bottomley but not him being born in Salford Thanks for that. I did find the page in the National Archives again Thanks. Now I'm on his tail, so to speak I guess I had better find when and on what boat he left the UK

Oh yes, I sometimes do that with other databases, but it usually takes me ages
