I wonder, when they release Gateshead will it have been magically moved back to County Durham, or will we have to remember that our relatives were living in Northumberland?

      That would be a shame.

Maybe they decided that any area within the district known as Tyne and wear would be included in the county of Northumberland. Tyne and Wear encompases Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

So we may find that Sunderland, South Shields and Jarrow, for example, will not be included with the Durham release, just like Gateshead. I hope they put Gateshead back into Durham, it will cause all sorts of confusion if they don't.

Here's more on what they say about it:

If you have an ancestor in Gateshead – please bear with us. Due to a peculiarity in the administration of the 1911 census, the area was enumerated as part of Northumberland, rather than with Durham, and the records will be added as part of Northumberland in accordance with the way the census was taken.

          Hmmmm.............
