  • Churches at Collieries

Whilst compiling a list of POWs still required for the Wiki for Durham, I have found a list of Methodist churches on the Durham RO site. There are loads of churches on there at places that aren't even mentioned on Genuki. There seem to be a lot at Collieries. Is this something peculier to Durham or have other people also found this?

I haven't noticed it as such Lynn, but it may be that the church has been built after the influx of workers to the colliery.

I can give you one local example of this, going off census descriptions.

The Parish of Elmton has its own church, the parish then became known as Elmton with Creswell, and after the colliery was sunk the parish became known as Creswell. The church is still standing at Elmton, and still active. However there is a brick church in Creswell which dates back to about the same time as the colliery was sunk and the new model village (to house the miners) was built.

    Hope that helps a bit
