Can you possibly tell me the cheapest way to get the following information, and how I go about it.

    • I would like the birth certificate of Charles Henry Rial so I can ascertain who his parents are
Particulars of the person whose certificate is required

    District Name*
    Volume Number*
    Page Number*
Reg (month & year of registration, mm/yyyy)*

    • I would also like the death certificate for JOHN RYALL. I know he was born 1792 in Lincolnshire and died in East Yorkshire. He Lived in Paull and his wife was called Martha, and the one son I know of was called Henry. The trouble is I have found two certificates that could be his. Would the certificate give his wifes name and the town where he cme from? Do I have to order both of these certificates to find out? How much are they?

Provided that you have the reference, you shouldn't have to pay more than £7 for a certificate. Information about how to order certificates can be found in our Wiki: England and Wales Certificates - Family Tree Forum

Depending on when he was born, you can search the transcribed indexes at FreeBMD or browse the full indexes at Ancestry to find the reference. More about FreeBMD here: Searching the FreeBMD site - Family Tree Forum

Birth certificate (assuming he was born 1837 or later) - find the entry for his birth registration in the GRO indexes and then when you go onto the GRO certificate order screen, make sure to tick "yes" for "Is the GRO Reference known?" Then you enter name, quarter, year, district, volume and page number and it will cost you £7.

Death certificate - it will only say his wife's name if she was the informant (the person who registered the death). It should tell you the address where he lived. You can specify "checking points" on the order form so that they only send you the cert if it matches what you have specified and if it doesn't then you don't pay the full amount. Or you could order one of the death certs and if it turns out to be the wrong one, order the other one.

Also, have you looked at Yorkshire BMD to see if it has any extra info about the death registrations, or looked for a burial?

I don't know if this is the Rial cert you need:

          Births Dec 1872
Rial Charles Henry Hull 9d 249

(that was the only Yorkshire one I could see)

The cheapest way to get a copy is to either order it from the local register office in Hull (is that their form you have copied?) or online from the GRO at Southport. Either way it shouldn't cost more than £7

Are these the two likely deaths?

            Deaths Jun 1852
            Ryall John Patrington 9d 141

            Deaths Mar 1859
            RYALL John Patrington 9d 146

            There is a birth here:

            Births Jun 1851
            Ryal John Patrington 23 72

who might be the "other" death as I can't yet see him in 1861. The best thing to do would be to order the death cert from the local register office, giving them both possible time frames, and state that you only want the cert if the man is aged approx X.

                That would be great.
Sorry I should have read my question more carefully before I posted it. Stuff that I pasted in was missing. It should have read:

I'm a bit confused by long and short certificates. Would a short birth certificate give the names of the parents?

You need to get a full (long) cert.

A short BC will only have name, DOB & registration district of birth, no details of parents.

£7 with reference no. (which you should have) or £10 without.

£7 from the GRO with reference.

A short BC is £3.50? but has no useful information to help with researching your tree.
