  • Lost soldier ca 1860 - 1873

    I've got

Robert Clemmett/Clemmitt born 1837 Knayton, Yorkshire, birth registered as Clement.

Married as Robert Harrison Clemett 1859 to Mary Jane Smith, Durham

    1861 East Hetton, Coxhoe, Durham
    Cuthbert Smith Head
    Elizabeth Smith Wife
Jane Harrison Dau married 20, soldiers wife

    1871 East Hetton, Coxhoe, Durham
    Elizabeth Smith Head
    Jane Smith Dau unmarried 29

1873 Mary Jane Harrison, widow marries Robert Wilson

Can anyone advise where to go with this, a record of his death &/or his service.

Story passed down the family was that my 2 x great grandfather John was a deserter in a war & he changed his name. That much is true as he was born a Clemmett/Clemmitt & became a Harrison, no evidence of being in a war though. John was the above Robert's brother, on one census their parents are listed as Harrison

    Thanks for reading

I know a family from Yorkshire called Clennett, so that could be a variation to try.

After all this time i've just found him on the 1861 census, listed in the 1861 worldwide army index and his death and burial in Bengal 1870 (British India Office records).
