  • Which name would Nancy be short for

I know this question must have been asked a 100 times but I can't find any reference to it.

I know that Nancy is a name in its own right now but was it in 1922 or could it have been a derivative of another name?

It can be a pet name for Anne, or a name in its own right. It certainly existed in its own right in 1922.

Really! Well her mother's name was Agnes.

            Are you sure?

If that is the case I know where to look now.

My Mum always pronounced the name Agnes An-yes. That makes Nancy a likelier derivative than a name with a hard g in it.

Thanks for that. I can't really see how you get Nancy from Agnes to be honest... but then some other shortened names or nicknames doesn't make sense either

:D Peggy, nickname for Margaret, always puzzles me

My grandmother, Louisa, was always called Jane by her sister 'Auntie Nance'.

It wasn't until I began the family research that I discovered Nance was really Annie and Louisa's second name was Jane

There are a few that follow that pattern, Rachel:
                                Margaret - Meg - Peg
                                Mary - Molly - Polly
                                Martha - Matty - Patty

ahhh thats good because its helped me. Thanks for those websites and everyone's input its been a great help because I wouldn't have had a clue about the name Agnes it seems far removed from Nancy to me.

Funny enough my name is Margaret but I've always wondered about why Peggy would be a nickname/or short for it!

It seems Ms turn into Ps
