  • Applying for a Will

I've raved so much about the fascination of genealogy that a friend has recently decided to start tracing her own family history and I have become her "phone a friend" !

To try to prove the parentage of an ancestor born 1836, she is hoping there is a will for the probable father's 1861 Birmingham death and has asked me how to go about applying for one.

I've no experience of wills, other than TNA downloadable ones, but I've just read the wiki entry. Could someone with experience please confirm that I should tell her to write to Postal Searches and Copies Department at York and ask for a search from 1861 to 1865?

Yes, but if York don't find anything then she will have wasted her money. If someone could have a look in the National Probate Index (held at County Record offices and some large libraries) then if there's an entry you would know it was worth applying.

One or two people on here will do a look up if you are not able to yourselves.

Thanks Merry. She's not in the UK and I've no idea if the IOW Records Office would have it.

Am I allowed to ask for a probate index look-up on here?

You could try the findmypast death duty index if the name isn't too common.

However, it's indexed like the complete BMD index, ie. if you search for Bloggs it'll bring up a page with Black-Blunt or whatever, so your name might not be on it at all.

Gillian, I would normally offer, but as half term has just started, it would be more than a week till I would be likely to get the chance to go and look. But if she is prepared to wait that long, then I will do it.

Thanks Mary. It is quite a common surname in the area.

Kate - thanks for the kind offer! May I pm you with the details after I have spoken to her? I imagine she is already beginning to learn that a large amount of patience is required for this lark lol

Yes, of course you can, Gillian. I suppose if she applied to York right away then she would still have a long wait for the reply, so at least this way she will find out fairly soon whether there is going to be a will or not.

PM received. Should be able to look it up next week.

I noticed you had a blog entry so I thought I'd have a peep at it and all it says is "Testing"! Boo.

lol Kate - I just wanted to try it out but couldn't think of anything to put! Bit like my wiki page really!

And, on the shelf above my computer, sitting staring at me to try to make me feel guilty, is the Mr Site Takeaway website one of the children gave me for Christmas. Haven't even opened the box - if I can't find a couple of sentences for a blog, what chance do I have of filling a website?

Thanks for the help with the will.
