Yes can do. My tree was a gedcom not a PAF.

            Sorry, here I am.

You don't need to give your personal details.

In the Export dialogue box, just untick Confidential Information and anything else you don't want.

Did you look at the PAF page in the Wiki that Elaine linked to?

I still don't understand how my Gedcom file was saved as a PAF file!!!

Mandy, a gedcom file (with the extension .ged) is the format you use for swapping information, but you can't read it directly.

To read it, you have to import it into a .paf or .ftm file.

If you then change it and want to give it to someone else, you have to export it again to .ged format.

Right...so...I have another file here a .PAF one.

I can read it in the PAF viewer but still can't convert to read in FTM...

                    I'm a tad confused!!!

Sorry, I only skimmed the thread - I thought Mandy was trying to export a gedcom from PAF.

I can't see how Wendy's .ged file can have got converted to .paf unless Mandy actually imported it into her PAF program.

If you have a file with the .paf extension, and you want to read it in FTM:

                          1. export it as Gedcom 5.5.

                          2. create a new file in FTM (File - New) (with a different name from your own tree)

                          3. import the gedcom into the new FTM file.

Mary...I have got as far as number 1...then when it asks me to make sure my name and 2 lines of address are tehre...it won't let me click ok and finish...it just keeps going round in a circle!!!

Mandy - presumably you have received this file via email.
What did you do then? If you double clicked on it, then it may well have opened in the PAF program, thus making it a PAF file!

What you should do is SAVE the file in its current format, i.e. gedcom format (presuming that is what Wendy has sent to you) - then open up the FTM program and click on FILE, OPEN and select the saved gedcom file.
