  • "By certificate"....?

Could someone please tell me the meaning of the phrase "by certificate" on a marriage cert? The words "according to the rites and ceremonies " have been crossed through and this bit written where you see "after banns" if it were a church wedding.

    Thanks!

    "By certificate"

    Hi Elisabeth.

I have had a quick look on google. Have a look at
    Marriage Certificate Tutorials

There is a lot to read but may have something there.
    I will keep looking.

If the marriage wasn't in a register office then it would usually have taken place in a non-conformist church of chapel where the registrar would have to be present. Occassionally a wedding can be by certificate and take place in a C of E church......very often this would be in a church where services were not taken regularly and so banns could not be read o three consecutive Sundays.....or where the couple had intended to marry somewhere other than the C of E but changed their minds at the last minute!

AFAIK my marriage was by a mixture of banns and certificate. The wedding was in my wife's home church in Scotland where banns were read for her. I was living in England, so I had my particulars exhibited for 3 weeks at the local register office and then took the certificate to the minister in Scotland.

I'm just worried about UJ's particulars being exhibited

I've got over it now, dear; it was over 40 years ago.
