    The article said exactly what you had predicted insomuch as he was running of money and subsequently was forced to sell up, probably at a loss. That might have accounted for the loss of funds for one of the children. (Incidentally I have the article in pdf format, but have been unable to load it up). I also found another London Standard article from 1861 (again I have it in pdf) which I initially thought provided the answer - it was about a judgement re probate and will, but since JFG has the White Hart after 1861, I have assumed that it not significant~?
