I found the workhouse admissions book in my local Record Office, it gave me quite a bit of info on my g g grandfather but what I dont understand is why he was there for 5 years prior to his death when he had 7 children. At least one of them I know went home to her father's house to have all her babies. You would have thought one of them could have looked after him, although there is a possible complication of a step daughter but she died in the workhouse before he did. I thought it such a sad ending for a hard working man who had lost two wives.

Thing is, you don't really know the circumstances of his children. They may have been overcrowded at home and just no room for him, or their spouses might have objected.

Or they may have had to work and no one home to look after him. Or his condition might have been such that he needed constant care, or was a danger to himself or other people.

My grandmother had Alzheimers and dementia for the last 12 years of her life. She was cared for in her own home by a retinue of old neighbours and her family - mostly her daughter in law.

But the old neighbours died, and then my auntie died too and there was no one left in the family willing to take on the care of this demented old woman who was extremely violent.(All the other brothers had youngish children, and wives who didn't relish the idea of dealing with a mother in law with dementia) There was no option but a home for her.

It may have been something similar in your case.
