How do you know he was imprisoned in 1860? Was he still in prison in 1861 census? If you have a newspaper account of the crime it would say where he was tried. Generally people spent time in prison nearest the court where the case was tried and any transfers to other prisons would be recorded in the prison register. Most of these are in county records offices.
The person I'm asking for found a newspaper article, where the person had the choice of a £5 fine or two months jail. The think jail would have been the more likely outcome.
I'm getting so more info before i go any further. Thank you both.
Such a short prison sentence would I think have been served in the nearest prison - it doesn't sound as though the person concerned was a hardened criminal!
