  • Ad Blocker

Can anyone recommended an ad blocker I can download or buy?

I don't mean pop ups but ads.

My Norton used to block ads but the new version doesn't seem to have that facility and ads just drive me crazy.

    Anyone know?

Don't use it myself, but this one looks quite good.

No I don't mean spyware or adware.

        I have Lavasoft Adaware

I mean the advertisements you get flashing at the top and sides of some sites like GR or Ancestry.

My old Norton blocked all of those.

Margaret - I use Adblock Plus - a free download recommended at a time when the GR ads were driving me barmy! I use it with Mozilla Firefox. I believe it doesn't work with IE.

I have found a download on the Internet with a free 30 day trial.

It isn't stopping them all, but an awful lot of them.

Have only downloaded it today so will see how it goes.

              UPDATE

I have deleted it. It kept making my screen freeze.

I may be wrong as I only have BT Norton now but I think you have to go into the programme & tick a little box to stop ads. Stopping ads isn't the default setting.

                  Glen

                  I have BT Norton too

It has a spyware thing but not an ad blocker

I have been on the Symantec (Norton) website. There are loads of complaints about them removing the ad blocker from the latest product.
Supposedly there is a free download, but apparently it doesn't work.

                    Margaret,

If you open the Norton Protection Centre & click web browsing, you have the option to turn on ad blocking.

                          Margaret,

Mine doesn't look like that. Just had a thought. Are you on Option 1 with Basic Security?

                          Glen.

                            Hi Glen

                            No Option 3

We have only had BT broadband for about 3 months.

Before that we had Norton from the disc.

The newest version of Norton on disc doesn't have the Ad Blocker either.

If you go to the symantec website there are loads of complaints about it.

                              Hi Margaret,

I'm on Option 4 which apparently isn't available anymore. BT keep suggesting we go for Option 3 as it's a few pounds cheaper but I think I'll stay where I am. I did the same when my Norton subscrtiption expired in June, I downloaded the BT version. I was getting ads & pop-ups until I altered the settings. I don't know how to send an image but I'll describe it to you.

When I bring up Norton Protection it shows this on the left:

                              Your PC & Data

                              Security Basics - Full Coverage
                              Data Recovery - No Coverage
                              Performance -Limited Coverage

                              And this on the right:

                              Your Activities Online

                              Web Browsing - Limited Coverage
Email & Messaging - Limited Coverage

When I open Web Browsing I have these options:

                              Auto-Protect
                              Spyware Protection
                              Personal Firewall
                              Intrusion Prevention
                              Parental Control
                              Ad Blocking
                              Pop-up Blocking

All of which can be turned on or off or configured.

I have to say if I ever lose Ad Blocking I'd dump Norton & go for something else. Are Norton trying to sell a separate programme for Ad Blocking?

Sorry I haven't been much help but I'd query it with BT.
                              Glen

Like I said, mines not like that.

The latest version of Norton that you can buy in the shops does not have an ad blocker.

There is a ad blocking free download on the Symantec website but I can't get it to work. I'm not alone in that either from what I read on that site.

I'm not going to complain I suppose. I usually pay for Norton. This comes with the BT Homehub package.
I'll just have to get used to it.

                                  Mr M

I think you are confusing anti spyware, which I do have, with ad blocking.

Ad blocking stops all the advertisments and banner ads that most sites have. You just see a blank space instead.

Margaret, have you sovled this yet?

If you are on IE7, try IE7Pro - The Ultimate Add-On for Internet Explorer.

I just downloaded it and it seems to block most things, though it doesn't block the flash ads on hotmail (there is an option to block flash ads, which I have turned on and is working)

Oh, forgot to say - it's free

                                      Hi Tracy

                                      Well I have downloaded it.

                                      It seems to be working.

Just tried some of the worst offenders (GR and Ancestry)

                                      So far so good :D
