      Hi Lin

Is there a doc for Phillip Cutliffe Lawrence as well, the other crewman who is commemorated at Wilford Hill?

Jessie must have died 1901 - 1911 as there is a new wife Emma born Derbyshire whereas Jessie has been consistently born Devonshire. He must have made a right muck up of the schedule as he says he has been married 40 years. The number of children are 5; 3 living and 2 deceased. That’s wrong as previous censuses have more than that. There are 3 still at home though which are also on previous censuses. No Henry though. Address is same as 1901 8 Brick Row Tantobie, Tanfield, Durham, England.

          Jessie died 1903

I am b*****ed if I can tie up Henry in 1911 by which time surely he must have been married to Elizabeth Ann as Robert is supposed to have been born c.1912. I have tried him single or married and can’t get a satisfactory match nor can I find a policeman of that name in County Durham. I have been using FMP.

My gt. uncle was a policeman in Cheshire and his personnel record had the details of his wife and children. Hopefully Durham records will have the same. One for Wulliam maybe if he is not too far away?

They're open Mon-Weds each week so I could go next week if you're able to identify exactly what I should ask/look for - haven't been to the Durham RO before - I live in the only part of the country where my wife and I don't have ancestors! If they're booked up it'd have to wait until my Easter holidays.

Please pm me to make sure I sure I see it!
                        Kind regards,

I have tried 1911 census on both ancestry and FMP for a Henry (and variants) Atkinson (and variants) both single and married in every place mentioned in the article but zilch. I’ve checked the occupations of all of them and can’t find anything remotely like a policeman - have tried *pol*, const*, serg*, officer. Where the heck is he??

I can't decide on birth year. Newspaper report says 55 - 27 years in force, making him 28 when he joined.

newspaper report dated 1935 so born 1880

But the 1939 reg that GL found says 28 Sept 1887

or am I going wrong somewhere?

here is a 1911 policeman, but single

Well done Carolyn. I was using his supposed birthdate +/-2 so missed that one. I wonder if Robert Atkinson was illegitimate and took on Henry’s name after he married Robert’s mother?

I am thinking the newspaper article matches the records I found.

and the Red Lion one with Elizabeth is another one, so maybe place of birth is not local? There is a death that matches the 1939 birth date in Cheltenham.
