I agree with Christine and wonder if the final word could be dyspnea, it would make sense. I had it in my head when reading cert but had to check spelling which appears to fit with the writing.
Good call - although I think it's the variant spelling of dypsnoea on the cert.

Just to sum up so far - we have Edwin Birch marrying Eliza Worn in 1848 and having children as follows:
Elizabeth Birch - eldest daughter - born circa 1849 died 1909 - did not marry
Emily Birch - 3rd daughter - died 1930 in Nimes, France - did not marry
Annie Birch - possibly 2nd daughter - born circa 1853 - unmarried as of 1901 census - I haven't found her in 1911 census or found a possible late marriage or death for her in Ireland. But perhaps she too ventured abroad?
Harriette Birch - unmarried as of 1909 - living in Putney at that time.
Seems unlikely that there are descendants from the above!
The only sons we know of as yet are Captain William Birch c1857-1918 and the son Edwin George Birch who died aged 2 (from the findagrave headstone)
Were there any more married sons or daughters?

Probate for Elizabeth Birch who died in 1909 - looks like there could be yet another spinster sister, as one of the executors is Mary A E Birch, spinster.

Couldn't find anything more on Mary A E Birch, but looking for records of the other executor, Georgina Shore, I found her dying in Dublin in 1925. She was a governess. Also found her in 1901 and 1911 censuses - and bingo - in 1911 she is a visitor in the household of Annie Birch, who has now moved down to Greystones in Co Wicklow and makes her living from houses:

Thanks Christine, there's also a couple of notices in the newspaper on FMP for births that have an address that matches where they were doing business at the time (Dawson Street/Molesworth Street). There's an entry for 1857 which I presume is William, but also an entry for a girl on 13 Aug 1862 and a boy on 27 Apr 1860.

I haven't found any other details for these yet.

Pity they are all before civil reg of births began in Ireland in 1864!
You could try going through Birch marriages on irishgenealogy.ie to see if you can find any where the father is Edwin Birch. That could be a long haul though, so possibly try familysearch first with father's name Edwin Birch in their Ireland Births and Baptisms and Irish Marriages collections...

As it looks like you have FMP - I found this for Mary Ann Eliza Birch (as in Mary A E post 23) which confirms her as child of Edwin and gives her baptism on 21st December 1851:

Under fathers and mothers name for applicant it has Edwin + (Mary Ann). Are we thinking that Eliza was just the name the mother was known by?
No - for some reason that is the name MAE gave in her application, but read the very bottom line which is what the searcher found in the parish registers ie parents Edwin and Eliza.

Ah, I see. That's very cool! I wonder why she applied for the record
I would imagine it could be to do with proving her age, as civil reg of births didn't start in Ireland until 1864. Possibly in order to claim an old age pension when she turned 70.
The more usual route to do this was to ask officials to search for you in the 1841/1851 censuses but perhaps a baptism cert might have sufficed. I've had a few who claimed via the census route, and surprisingly, they don't always get their own mother's name right!

I've been continuing to flesh out what I know about this family..
I have this baptism record for Margaret Birch, daughter of Capt. William Birch and Louisa Smith. You can see a note on the left that she married at the Salisbury Catholic Cathedral in 1957 to a Mr Spencer, but I've checked Ancestry and FMP and can't find any record of that marriage.
Does anyone have an idea where else I could look? I googled the cathedral itself, but nothing stuck out in terms of checking indexes/records with them.

it does say Salisbury catholic cathedral, South Rhodesia, so assume the record is there. Am I reading this correctly - the baptism in 1894, 1957 is a very long time after!

Thanks Carolyn, I'll try that. It seems our only local Family history centre is only open one day per week, so I'll have to wait until next week now to have a look, as I don't have a membership to that site.
family search is free. you just need to create an account.
Oh for some reason I thought I had tried that and it told me I needed to go to one of their centres.. oh well
Haven't found the marriage yet, but her death notice is available, which states her as the wife of Frank Spencer. Birth location and date match. She also left a reasonable will.. I wonder if that's available..
