  • Any idea on place of birth

    Hi

I am currently looking at the place of birth for someone, and while I can clearly see she is from Hampshire in each census I have no idea of the location. I am from Hampshire and nothing is still coming to mind. I have even googled what all the towns and villages are in Hampshire and again nothing jumps out.

    Im looking at Elizabeth Kirby/Kerbey

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Beauchamps ?? It’s Welwyn Garden City according to google maps. Got that from the middle one of your links. The top and bottom ones look different to that one.

Just totally ignore my two previous posts. I should have been looking Hampshire not Hertfordshire. Brain dead, sorry.

I have snipped them and put them all on here, thought it might be easier to compare:

            1861.JPG

            1871.JPG

            no sure that it helps!

wondered if the border had ever moved around there, and now in a different county.

they do seem quite clear that it is Hampshire, but could be beauchamp

Beaulieu - that would be pretty hard to spell?

It may be a question of asking someone from the Chelsea area to speak those names aloud, for you to think what Hampshire person might have said to sound like that... But Burghclere does seem plausible as a possible source to get those spellings.
My initial suggestion was because I had someone in a Portsmouth (I think) census whose PoB was given as "Demport". I had a headstart, because I knew where he came from but I think I might have guessed, because I've heard how "Devonport" is pronounced by people in the Plymouth area! :D

Her age is pretty consistent in the censuses. Have you got a maiden name for Elizabeth so you could search for a baptism in Hampshire c.1813. Hopefully the vicar will have written the parents’ residence if it wasn’t the actual village that the church stood in.

From Louisa's birth registration her maiden name appears to be Rickman.

In 1841 at Mill Row, St Johns, Fulham:
                            William Kirbey 30 Painter Journeyman
                            Elizabeth 30
                            Ann 3
                            Samuel Rickman 15 Smith Journeyman

All shown as born in County

Good find, I tried to find a MMN, but couldn't locate the same name on a Thomas birth.
