The light bulb has come on! I see that the date mentioned 22nd must be his death date, the newspaper was printed Friday 25th and says funeral to be the following day 26th at 1pm. I hope there might be a bit of a potted biog on p.18 in the paper dated 26th.
How weird that newspapers were printed on Christmas Day and funerals held on Boxing Day.

The person that he is living with on the registration card (James Cowie, same address as JWM, 9020 Bryden) is not with him in the 1940:

but the "extra line" is interesting. I wonder if the enumerator wanted to get the information from him directly, but was never succeeded and left the line blank. I suspect he was never enumerated in the 1940.Last edited by PhotoFamily; 12-12-19, 03:54.

Ugh. FS has the index cards to the naturalization cards online, but it's some sort of soundex search to get 'em. Labour of love? Someone with more experience and can figure out the system?

Of course - there's no guarantee that he naturalized in Detroit. Is there any knowledge of when he immigrated, and where he lived?Last edited by PhotoFamily; 12-12-19, 04:10.

Sometime after 1912 as I have what I am sure is him joining The Ayrshire Yeomanry with an address in Ayr. His next of kin is his mother. The details for the mother look right as well. His father died 1906 so not on 1911 census. I have not been able to find a death for his mother. There is no exact match and too many speculative ones. Another odd thing is that his father is listed on a McCall family gravestone but his mother is not. I need another visit up to Sanquhar churchyard as I have discovered that I don’t have a picture of the front of the white painted stone on which James William gets a mention on the back.
James is a lodger living Detroit on the 1930 US census, I can’t remember if I found him on the 1920.Last edited by GallowayLass; 12-12-19, 09:04.
