  • Death records for WW2

If someone died abroad during WW2 would their death be recorded in the UK anywhere?

    Thanks

If they were a war casualty then they should be on the Commonwealth War Graves website. If not they might have been recorded as a British person who died abroad, but probably not.

Fmp has the british citizen's bmd's registered overseas index. They had to be registered with the consulate i believe. Depends on the situation? If they emmigrated, they would just be registered as a local event.

The GRO and National Records of Scotland have records of all overseas service deaths and certificates of death can be ordered. These are not in the usual format but in an abbreviated services style but has the same legal status. The index to theses records can be accessed through Findmypast
