following on from Elaines links
here is another accident I assume it is our John Jenkins:
The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954)Tuesday 18 June 1861
YESTERDAY, a report was brought into town that a man named Evan Jones had been killed in the tunnels by coal falling on him. The Coroner, Dr. B. C. Knaggs, immediately repaired to the spot, and found ...
A John Jenkins absconding:

It says in Trove John Jenkins arrived on the "Dudbrook" but the only record for the transportation ship I can find is the one arriving 1852 which is after the newspaper report date of 1851 - no John Jenkins aboard anyway.

Found another for Dudbrook - I wonder if he was in steerage then on this one. Not as a convict but as a passenger. Departed London arrived Port Jackson, New South Wales 29 Jul 1851 - that would fit
mariners, crew, passengers, stowaways, whaling, cabin, steerage, barque, steam ship, brisbane, sydney, adelaide, melbourne, hobart, tasmania, new zealand, san francisco, australian, warner, genealogy, australia, new south wales, nsw, departure, travel, arrivals, shipping, ships, vessels, captain, trimmer
Edit: We crossed post there Carolyn. Obviously then the reports for missing person in 1851 could not be the one we are looking for.Last edited by Katarzyna; 18-11-19, 10:40.Kat

Thank you everyone for helping me on this. Sorry for no input from me up to this stage, as I have been away for work and no access to internet.
I will look deeper into what everyone has mentioned above.
From my family stories many years ago, I do not believe he was a convict. Unfortunately, there are no people alive to ask any more questions on this now.
Thanks so much!

I don't think it gives helpful anymore info, confirms that he was born in Gloucester as the death record. So think the Woolastone one is a likely candidate starting at post 11.Carolyn

It is transcribed as Jinkins in Ancestry.
They so seem to be the only Jenkins that seem to match what is known, so are likely to be the ones, not sure if there is anything else that can prove it?
I found a marriage for brother George Jenkins (I guess it is him), but I am sure it says his father was a soldier?
but guess he could have been a miner and a soldierCarolyn

there is this death:
JENKINS, RICHARD 45
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in GLOUCESTER UNION Volume 11 Page 271
I am not sure what/where Gloucester Union means, clutching at straws really, as Richard could have dies anytime after 1829 when last child seems to have been born and before 1841 census.Last edited by cbcarolyn; 15-01-20, 22:43.Carolyn
