    Reginald drowned.

Found a newspaper article in the West Cornwall News on F.M.P. 1936 re Reginald Garfield Richards who had a heart attack and drowned whilst swimming in the river Gannel in Newquay. He was 20 and a kitchen porter in the Pentire Hotel.

I dont have a sub for F.M.P. so would like to know if there were any more facts in the article, if someone can help with this.

    Many thanks.

Very young for a heart attack. I wonder if he had an undiagnosed heart condition?

Sorry, just me thinking aloud again!

We were in Salcombe in September on holiday and I bought a book about the Salcombe Lifeboat Disaster in 1916 (I think). When they did postmortems on the men who died the cause of death for many of them was cardiac failure. I think you can die of shock before you drown.

Yes, now you say that, I have heard you can die of shock in cold water if you dive in rather than wading in.

Well, how coincidental! Just watching my local news (Cornwall) and there was an item about how dangerous the river gannel now is. Storms destroyed an old sea wall which was responsible for channelling the river across the beach, so now the river flows unpredictably across the beach and there have been more than 30 rescues this season.
