I did find this;
and there seems to be a child after 1849, is this your family? I can't actually find the 1851 census
Haven't yet turned my attention to the child Ellen, but Ancestry is being difficult this morning - page not found, come back later type stuff - so will have to persevere.

So although we seemed to have found more of the family, no further forward in finding Edwards parents.
Did you see this baptism for Mary Ann in Swindon - no idea if it is the right one.

Oh, and yes, we - I'm freely sharing the pain - do still have the mystery of Edward's origins.

link to Wolf is interesting though a bit of fame - always nice to have that in a tree!, but guessing Ellen (Elizabeth) is not your line.
Also the baptism in 1851 is odd if Edward had diedLast edited by cbcarolyn; 29-08-19, 17:12.Carolyn

Seriously though, I wonder what the time lag was between collecting the info for the Directory and publishing it?

There's no birth registration for baby Jessie, but there is a death registration for her, so I suppose it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that they didn't register the second Mary Ann's birth either. Mary Ann (the daughter) and her husband Thomas Allen registered the births of all their seven children, but only one of them with any given names - the rest are just male or female. Took me ages to work them all out!Always looking for Goodwins in Berkshire.

Will investigate possible death of 1st Mary Ann (b 1841) and birth of 2nd Mary Ann (b 1843) and see what I can find - if anything.
Thanks for all your help so far.

Thanks for all those Carolyn.
I've been looking at the two possible Mary Anns, but am not really any further forward. On the census records that I have for her her age is all over the place:
1841 - age 1mth, so b. 1841
1851 - age 5, so b. abt 1846
1861 - age 20, so b. abt 1841
1871 - age 27, so b. abt 1844
1881 - age 36, so b. abt 1845
1891 - age 43, so b. abt 1848
which doesn't help much, does it?
Baby Jessie was (according to the baptism register) b. 11.2.1843, so it is possible for Mary Ann-II to have been b. 29.11.1843, which would mean that Mary Ann-I would need to have died sometime between her own baptism on 8.3.1843 and the birth of Mary Ann-II on 29.11.1843.
Off to check the burials again in case she's been mis-transcribed.
