  • Help with Martha please?!

    Hello all,

I am trying to find Martha Hill before her marriage to Micheal Harris in 1835, Chieveley, Berkshire.
Her DOB ranges from 1801 to 1811 on the census' (I cant find her birth/christening) - she says she is born in Chieveley, Berkshire.
I can see a marriage for a Martha Hill to a William Dickson in 1828, Berkshire and thought maybe she had married him before Micheal Harris but why would she then use her maiden name in the 2nd marriage and I can't find a death for William unless they split up / divorced?
Can anyone else spot another Martha Hill or find anything else about her? I am just about to try familysearch in case there is anything on there.
    Thanks for reading

In the 1851 census for Michael and Martha Harris there is a son George Harris b 1832. He is not with them in 1841. Wonder if he was from the marriage to William Dickson. Not seeing him in 1841 yet.

looking at this link, and having a search around it seems that Berkshire records is lacking in transcriptions, so possibly why you can't find anything on line

Looks like the Berks fhs have transcribed and selling the data.

The GRO index has the mother's maiden name for the children as Cooper:

          HARRIS, JEMIMA mmn COOPER
GRO Reference: 1840 D Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 209

          HARRIS, CHARLES ELI mmn COOPER
GRO Reference: 1843 M Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 225

          HARRIS, EMMA ANN mmn COOPER
GRO Reference: 1846 M Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 246

ADDED: Elijah Hill married Martha Cooper in Chieveley in 1831

I think George (as Cooper) may be with Martha's sister (?) Sarah Headington in Bray in 1841.

The children of that family also have the mmn Cooper:

            HEADINGTON, ELLEN mmn COOPER
GRO Reference: 1839 S Quarter in COOKHAM Volume 06 Page 156

there seems to be a number of george Harris dotted about )of same age), I thought it likely that he was with a family member especially at other child only 6 months old, so maybe helping out. Shame 1841 census does not have birthplace

I did see that there is a George and his Mother later on and assume these to be the same. Birth place changes from Chieveley and Curridge/Courage which appears to be within Chieveley
