  • Customs House Officer

Hi all from a very sunny Queensland

Still looking for a friend who is chasing William/George Hooper. He is described as a "Booker at the Quays" and a "Customs House Officer" on his children's London baptism records in the 1850's. We've looked online at the National Archives records, but can't find any likely Hoopers there. Are there any other online sites we should be looking at or should we consider hiring someone to look in the UK for us? We know that William/George Hooper lived in the Camden Town/LongAcre area in the 1850's, but really not much more.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks all

Is it information about his career you are searching for, or general information about the family?

can you give more details, childrens names and their date of births. He may have been born elsewhere and moved there in the 1850s, many did. St Pancras is the Camden area.

We could try and find census records

Caroline Townsend Hooper is the first child of William Hooper and Caroline Townsend, followed by George, Henry and lastly Emma in 1862.

Edith Bertha is the daughter of a James and Fanny Hooper.

Not Edith then, George William as mentioned previously? Although can't find him on GRO

With that lot you would think they would be easy to find.

Was just looking to see what customs officers do, wondering if they went to sea.

GRO Reference: 1862 S Quarter in MARYLEBONE Volume 01A Page 412

Emma was born in the workhouse after William deserted the family.

I think as a customs officer William would have worked mainly at the London quays, but I could be wrong - I'm still trying to find out exactly what they did as an occupation myself

The National Archives holds most surviving English and many surviving Irish records of Excise officers. These officers collected taxes levied on home products such as alcoholic drinks, and as a result were sometimes very unpopular. In 1849 the Board of Excise was amalgamated with the Board of Stamps and Taxes to form the Board of Inland Revenue, and in 1909 the excise responsibilities of […]

                                    Yes, that's Emma.

Working on the theory that William ran away and set up house with a younger woman called Ellen and had a second family - but still trying to put all the pieces together - if indeed they fit.

Sons George and Henry emigrated to Queensland and seem to have had relatively happy and stable lives.

so the records Val found are correct with ellen.

Strange there is not 1861 census.

Yes, most of Val's records are spot-on and a great help. The only thing is that Ellen's maiden name wasn't Miniham - that is another William and Ellen Hooper, both Irish.
I can't find a marriage yet for the William and Ellen in question - maybe they were just defacto? But it is all starting to fit - William being from Reading, Berkshire where his first partner Caroline was also from - the timing of him getting with Ellen and so on

The youngest son, another William, born in 1874, is described as an "imbecile" on the 1891 census poor thing. He died aged 21 in 1895. Daughter Ellen married in 1899:
https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...&rhSource=7579. She described her father as a "gentleman" and he was supposedly deceased by then. I'm still trying to track down the whereabouts of their elder son and daughter Jane, born in 1869 I think - and
trying to narrow down what mother Ellen's maiden name might have been. She is from Goudhurst in Kent.

Everyone's help has been terrific. I am very appreciative
