  • History talks/events coming up, overlapping: Southampton FC, WW1

There are some talks coming up in Southampton - sorry I didn't think to let people know about the WW2 version in the summer.

1 The seventh-month exhibition on the club’s history is in its final month at Southampton’s SeaCity Museum (until Sunday 28 October).

The exhibition includes three panels on the Saints in this War:

    1. Local hero Cecil Christmas, a Banister Court pupil who became a successful local hotelier, was commisioned into the King’s Royal Rifles as Second Lieutenant and was killed on the Somme in October 1916.
    2. Bert Shelley was a boy-soldier from Romsey who developed his footballing skills with the Hampshire Regiment in India and the Wiltshires in Palestine, for a record-breaking inter-war career with the Saints.
    3. The Harland & Wolff shipyard recruited enough footballing boilermakers to win the South Hants War League, ahead of the Saints and Pompey.
2 Those three stories will feature in a talk by David Bull, one of the club’s Official Historians, at the Civic Centre Lecture Theatre at 3 pm on Thursday 18 October, on The Saints in WW1.

Other stories in this generously-illustrated talk will include more heroics on the Somme –
notably of Donald Bell, who had joined the Footballers’ Battalion and would become the club’s most decorated soldier (MC and posthumous Bar) – and the many guest-players, not least the air mechanics from the “concentration camp” at RFC Netheravon.
3 At 11 a.m on Saturday 10 November, a plaque commemorating the Southampton FC footballers who fell in either World War, will be unveiled on an exterior wall of the club’s
St Mary’s Stadium. The club’s guests at the ceremony will include John Sillett, the former footballer whose ex-Saint father Charlie, lost at sea in 1945, is named on the plaque; representatives of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and of the Hampshire Regiment’s Museum; and the great-nieces of 2nd Lt Cecil Christmas.
This information was supplied to me by David Bull, one of the historians associated with Soton FC, and who will be giving the talk on18 October.
