  • Death certificate?

Where would I get a death certificate for someone who was lost from SS Vedra off the coast of Barrow in Furness in 1914?

Have tried BMD but can’t find a record there for him.

Don’t have subs for fMP, only for Ancestry. It is a death certificate I was hoping to get but can’t find a Reference number on the GRO site.

Does it make a difference whether his body was ever recovered or not?

Would there be a death cert if he was never found?

If no body was recovered then I THINK it is 7 years before someone can be presumed dead, so a death cert might have been issued years later.

Otherwise deaths at sea are listed on the GRO overseas registers. I don't know how you access those but I'm sure someone else does!

Ah, never thought about the fact that maybe the body wasn’t found. Will try another search with a greater time span!

Was this as a result of an explosion? In which case, there may not have been identifiable remains. Have you looked for newspaper reports of inquests?

Yes, it was an oil tanker fire. Never thought of there not being an identifiable body. Surely though there had to be a death certificate?

Thank you so much Val! Yes, that is him! I assume there must be a death certificate somewhere!! He was my paternal grandmother’s brother. I had an Uncle who was named after him.....Edgar Alexander Was his full name.

Now to see if there are any newspaper reports on this.

Thanks for your help!! Just seen the image you posted as well, thanks again!

The death cert will be on the GRO births and deaths at sea register. I doubt if you can order on line, you will have to phone or write with the details you have.

You can order overseas english records from gro online, it's just the old way of doing it, no pdf's.

Thanks Kyle, I didn't know that, I thought you needed a reference to order on line.

You do, the indexes are on FMP. I ordered an army birth and a merchant navy death using the overseas births, deaths, marriages indexes on FMP.

My gg uncle drowned of the coast of Suffolk in 1871. The only record of him is in the Register for Deceased Seamen's Effects on FMP. There is no death cert.

Would there be a Death Cert if he was missing presumed drowned??

Isn't it missing for seven years presumed dead? Either way there would have to be an inquest.
