Thanks for the Gib article - lots of good information there. I'd no idea until your thread that it was used as a penal settlement, although I've marvelled at some of the workmanship with stone! I wonder if it was during his spell there that William acquired his skills as a carpenter?
What a character to have in your tree, Elaine, I'm quite envious;D
We just need a lucky break - an obituary for one of them could do the trick. Can anyone access Kansas/Missouri newspapers?

Having real problems with the search on the Kansas City Journal site but have come up trumps a little
Main page
Just looking at the first few and Major W F Tann ?? son George bringing home a French bride ????
But I do know they lived on Locust Ave so the death of (second wife to William) Mary Tann's sister is in the issue

I've been looking to see if I can find 1st Mary's maiden name via a post 1911 death of one of the chilldren. However
I think it's Hartnett.
Can see deaths for Richard 1877, William Fdk Snr 1928, Thomas George 1938 and Johanna/Josephine 1977 which only reveal
Hartnett on one occasion.
Have you got anything on Wm Fdk Jnr after 1880 or Mary Elizabeth/Elizabeth/Lizzie after 1900?
I think it's either 1st Mary's dc when or if Kansas records come online. Or maybe track down church in Brooklyn for marriage.
Johanna had a child christened RC.

So disappointed for you that you haven't been able to get any further at present.
However, I'm sure something will turn up in the future as new record set releases always bring new clues, often when least expected.
People new to this game are genuinely shocked when I say it has taken ten, twenty, and in one case almost thirty, years for that one little bit of evidence to surface. But when it does come to light and everything finally falls into place, oh the bliss and satisfaction that it brings are beyond description!
My genealogy motto is NEVER give up and always keep an eye open as evidence turns up in the most unlikely places and often when and where you least expect it.
Please keep us up to speed, even if it's just a case of resurrecting the thread from time to time and adding "no joy yet."
With your expertise and googling skills, I'm confident that you WILL crack it eventually.

Thanks for your kind words Jay and will do.
Must say since I was diagnosed with a long term illness, the last few months spending more time here has really helped.Elaine
