And 1900 in Wyandotte, with widowed daughter - wonder if any paperwork for her might have mother's surname or details of origins of parents? In this census, wife Mary was born in England!

You have his movements spot on and glad you filled me in with the Kansas/Missouri bit.

William was a carpenter but given as blacksmith in the paper re his misdemeanour.

For son George Tann dying in Missouri 1938, mother is Irish

          Here's a good spelling too

          Lizzie Gann
          Kansas, Marriages
          Name Frank Minahon
          Event Type Marriage
          Event Date 24 Aug 1882
Event Place , Wyandotte, Kansas, United States
          Gender Male
          Age 23
          Marital Status Married
          Birth Year (Estimated) 1859
          Birthplace of Jefferson Co., Kan.
          Spouse's Name Lizzie Gann
          Spouse's Gender Female
          Spouse's Age 19
          Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated) 1863
Spouse's Birthplace of Wyandott Co., Kan.

Have bits from the Sheehan's but haven't looked at the Doherty side as it is a second marriage; need to look at Missouri a bit maybe...after another cuppa!

Have been looking Elaine. Noted the William as a 17 year old Blacksmith and then solidly a Carpenter through all of the census.
Not seeing him arriving in the US with or without Mary H. Very tight as Jay says. First child Mary E 21 months at time of 1865 census.
Williams sponsor for naturalisation swore in 1868 William had been in USA for at least 5 years.
Did look for Mary H's death between 1900/1910 but note Kansas deaths not easily available pre 1911 but there are some old volumes being worked on.
Will look at deaths of the children to see if I can get 1st Mary's mn.

I'm finding it quite difficult to get my head around what few official records there are for the time before the 1870's. Makes me realise how lucky we are in having civil records from 1837 and Church records from Elizabethan times. Also centuries of wills for those with property or possessions. One whistle-stop tour of the States nearly 40 years ago was an eye opener - compared with the UK, there was just nothing "old" and artefacts on display in museums were what I would call "bygones". I had older exhibits in my house :D
