Hi everyone x Just getting a bit research done and came across one of mine living just locally and his occupation shown as what looks like Bird Fanciers Dog Not sure what else it could be and would you really make a living that way? Im assuming he bred birds? He goes on to be landlord in the village - lovely, times Ive sat in that pub and not realised If anyone has any ideas please

Thanks Jill, does seem very odd doesnt it. The wife and son are both working in the brush works that were just down the road then (demolished in the 90s and a new estate built on the land plus a riverside park) So thats fair enough but working on own account as bird fancier, and the dog bit added. Thats weird I shall go and look at the cottage tomorrow and see if any clues there

I couldn't find a list of 1901 census occupation categories but in 1911 category 976 was "Dog, Bird, Animal - Keepers, Dealers" so I think the enumerator had added the word Dog as shorthand for the category this guy came under. Doesn't mean he kept dogs as well as the birds he fancied!Judith passed away in October 2018

Is this him in 1891? If so, he was a publican.
Could he have been between pubs when 1901 census was taken?
John Nichols above was licensee at the Cross Keys Wymondham from 1888 to 1901
Is this him in 1911?
I found 2 John Nichols (of similar age) in Wymondham in 1891, but the one I've referenced was the only one with a pub connection as far as I could see.
