One of the witnesses to the marriage was A W Butler if that helps.

Does this rule out Charles with a Charles Butler as father?

I think it does rule it out unfortunately, but thanks for looking, just such a common name

1901 he is with father Charles (widower) still living Avery Street.

He's with parents on 1881 and 1891 too - all as son not step son.

What's the ref for the one you found as step son?

I was curious why it would say step son...

Sorry Gloria, I'm not sure where you are going with this. That is the same one as I posted previously and Charles is definitely not a step son.

Ahh! Are you thinking that the S in the next column stands for Step? It means Single.

Hi Gloryer, mystery solved. Findmypast have transcribed him as stepson which is incorrect. That's why it's always best to view the image

Edit: It's weird they should have done that, the other son and daughter written either side of him have been transcribed correctly. Did you get this from Family Search? They usually direct you to FMP to view the image.

I got it from the Archives site connected to ancestry. Had a free months trial but the search engines not very good on it, and you cant view all the images only the transcriptions

I have now found that David Butler was buries at St Thomas Carlton 29th aug 1866 and that he had a brother called Worthy and they used Worthy as a middle name for one of their children
